The COMMUNICATION CENTER provides hearing evaluations for all ages of patients from birth to geriatric. The type of evaluation performed will depend on the age and abilities of the patient. Early Intervention Hearing Evaluations (Birth to 2 Years) Using Visual Reinforcement Audiometry (lights and figures) or Play Audiometry (play a game in response to the sounds) we can evaluate how well children respond to sounds in their environment. We use tones and speech to determine acuity. We also test the middle ear to be sure the ear is healthy. Occassionally, results are inconclusive and reevaluation or referal for objective testing is necessary. Pediatric/CPSE Evaluations Using tones, children can raise their hands in response to the beeps. They are asked to repeat words to demonstrate understanding and volume concerns. We also test the middle ear to in sure the system is healthy. Most children this age are capable of performing these tasks. Adult Evaluations In addition to the tests performed on children, we test reflexes, and perform other specialized tests, depending on the problem, to determine if the nerve and brain are responding to auditory testing appropriately. Adults are usually referred for hearing evaluations as part of a routine physical exam or due to a problem such as: Poor hearing Sudden change in hearing Ringing in the ear Dizziness Noise Exposure Family member referred for poor hearing |
